CBF considers restructuring Copa do Nordeste tournament
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is discussing a major restructuring of the Copa do Nordeste tournament following a significant decline in attendance and technical quality during the 2026 edition. Attendance dropped from an average of 7,369 paying spectators per match in previous years to approximately 2,612 in 2026.
One proposal, presented by Evandro Carvalho, president of the Pernambuco Football Federation (FPF), suggests a new qualification model for 2028. Under this plan, only state champions would receive guaranteed spots, while the remaining 11 vacancies would be filled based on the National Club Ranking (RNC).
While this shift could increase the tournament's technical level by ensuring more competitive teams participate, critics argue it would reduce the opportunities for emerging clubs that perform well in state championships but lack high national ranking points.
