Brazilian regional football tournament restructuring

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is evaluating structural changes to regional football competitions following declining attendance and technical quality in the Copa do Nordeste. In the 2026 edition, average match attendance fell to approximately 2,612 spectators, down from previous averages of 7,369.

To address these challenges, the Pernambuco Football Federation (FPF) has introduced a new pilot model for the Campeonato Pernambucano for the 2026/27 season. This unified structure integrates the former A1 and A2 divisions into a single competition of 31 clubs. The model utilizes regionalization to expand the calendar and reduce costs, dividing participants into four groups: Sertão, Agreste, Zona da Mata, and Região Metropolitana.

While the CBF is monitoring the FPF pilot, discussions regarding the Copa do Nordeste include a proposal to limit guaranteed spots to state champions, with remaining vacancies filled via the National Club Ranking (RNC). Proponents suggest this would raise the technical level, though critics warn it may limit opportunities for emerging clubs.
