CBF approves gradual reduction of foreign player limits in Brazil
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has approved a new regulation to gradually reduce the number of foreign players allowed in matches for the Brasileirão (Série A and B). The current limit of nine foreign players per match will decrease to eight in 2027, seven in 2028, six in 2029, and finally to five by 2030.
This measure aims to increase opportunities for domestic talent and address the aging profile of Brazilian squads. Alongside the reduction, clubs will be required to implement a mandatory quota for players under 23. Starting in 2027, teams must include at least 20 players under 23 in their 50-man rosters, a requirement that will scale up to 25 by 2030.
Brazil national team coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed support for the change, stating it is a “very positive thing” for fostering local talent. While some clubs, such as Bahia, voted against the measure, others like Botafogo and Palmeiras are already adjusting their long-term squad planning. The rule change is also expected to drive an increase in naturalization processes among long-term foreign residents, such as Uruguayan midfielder Arrascaeta, to avoid occupying foreign player slots.
