CBL-514 injection shows potential to destroy fat cells
Experimental drug CBL-514, developed by Caliway Biopharmaceuticals, has shown promise in clinical trials for its ability to destroy fat cells rather than simply shrinking them. Unlike existing weight-loss medications such as Wegovy or Mounjaro, this injection aims to trigger apoptosis, a process where cells undergo controlled self-destruction.
Phase 2 clinical trials involving participants in studies CBL-0204 and CBL-0205 indicated that the treatment effectively reduces subcutaneous fat. Additionally, data from a subgroup of 41 participants showed an average reduction of 12.01 percent in visceral fat—the deep tissue surrounding internal organs—four weeks after the final injection. In contrast, the placebo group saw a 5.7 percent increase in visceral fat during the same period.
Researchers, including endocrinologist Timothy Garvey from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, suggest that destroying fat cells could theoretically help prevent the weight regain often seen after stopping traditional weight-loss drugs. While the drug was reported to be well-tolerated, with common side effects including temporary swelling and pain, the results have not yet undergone formal peer review and were presented at a scientific meeting.
