CBL-514 clinical trials for fat reduction
Overview
Clinical trials for an experimental injection known as CBL-514, developed by Caliway Biopharmaceuticals, have demonstrated potential in reducing visceral and subcutaneous fat. The treatment functions by inducing apoptosis, a process where fat cells are triggered to self-destruct, rather than simply reducing the volume of existing cells. This mechanism distinguishes it from existing weight-loss medications like Wegovy or Mounjaro.
Phase 2 clinical trials, specifically studies CBL-0204 and CBL-0205, indicated that the treatment effectively reduces subcutaneous fat. Follow-up analysis of a subgroup of 41 participants confirmed that those receiving injections saw an average reduction in visceral fat volume of 12.01% four weeks after the final injection, while the placebo group experienced an average increase of approximately 5.7%.
Researchers, including endocrinologist Timothy Garvey from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, suggest that by reducing the total number of fat cells, the treatment may help prevent the weight regain often seen after stopping traditional weight-loss drugs. While the drug was reported to be well-tolerated, common side effects included temporary swelling and pain. These results were presented at a scientific meeting but have not yet undergone formal peer review. Early data also suggest that the reduction of visceral fat may lead to improvements in cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
