CDC declares end to major cyclosporaspora outbreak linked to lettuce

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officially declared the end of the largest cyclosporasiasis outbreak in U.S. history on September 11. The parasite, which causes severe intestinal illness, was linked to iceberg lettuce processed at Taylor Farms de Mexico in Guanajuato, Mexico. At its peak in July, the outbreak saw more than 1,000 cases per day, spreading across 49 states and Washington, D.C. By early September, new reported infections had dropped to fewer than two per day.

In regions like Johnson County, Iowa, the summer of recalls has shifted consumer behavior. Local residents have expressed increased interest in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs to ensure food security and avoid contaminated produce from grocery stores and fast-food outlets. Local health departments continue to monitor food safety and conduct onsite inspections of retailers following such recalls to ensure community safety.
