Overview

Taylor Farms continues to manage two distinct food safety crises involving Cyclospora and Salmonella.

The Cyclospora cayetanensis outbreak, linked to shredded iceberg lettuce from central Mexico, has expanded significantly. As of August 21, 2026, the outbreak has affected more than 27,000 people across 47 states. Michigan remains the most heavily impacted state, with reports indicating over 14,000 cases and 335 hospitalizations. The outbreak has resulted in at least two deaths and hundreds of hospitalizations.

In response to the scale of the crisis, FDA investigators have traveled to Taylor Farms’ processing facilities in Mexico to conduct inspections. These facilities, including a site in Guanajuato, had not undergone an FDA inspection in seven years. Investigators are focusing on whether irrigation water served as a source of contamination. Traceback efforts have faced challenges, including a postponed federal rule that would have required companies to provide supply chain records within 24 hours, and difficulties in obtaining records from distributors like Taco Bell. While a significant spike occurred in July, recent CDC data suggests new infections may be beginning to taper off.

Simultaneously, the company is managing a Salmonella outbreak involving jalapeño-based products. The contamination was traced to a producer in Sinaloa, Mexico, distributed via Coast Citrus Distributors. Taylor Farms has issued voluntary recalls for numerous prepared products, including salsas, guacamole, pico de gallo, and taco dips, distributed to major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Whole Foods, and HEB. In Texas, HEB removed a wide range of items, including stuffed mushrooms and shrimp cocktails, from its inventory. The CDC reports 345 illnesses across 27 states and 36 hospitalizations. Taylor Farms has ceased sourcing from the implicated grower.
