Cyclospora outbreak persists, Michigan epicenter

Overview

CDC data released on July 10 2026 show that the Cyclospora outbreak that began in southeastern Michigan last summer continues to expand. Michigan health officials have confirmed 1,562 laboratory‑verified infections, 44 hospitalizations and no deaths, making it the state’s largest cyclosporiasis event on record. Nationwide, the CDC now reports over 2,800 confirmed cases across 32 states and an additional 1,500 suspected cases under investigation.

The source of contamination remains unidentified; whole‑genome sequencing of parasite isolates and traceback investigations are ongoing, with fresh produce—particularly leafy greens, herbs and berries—still the primary suspect. Public‑health guidance remains unchanged: wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly, discard damaged portions, avoid pre‑washed bagged salads when possible, and cook vegetables to at least 70 °C (158 °F). High‑risk groups are urged to stay vigilant. Treatment continues to be a short course of trimethoprim‑sulfamethoxazole, with emphasis on hydration to prevent dehydration complications. No fatalities have been recorded to date.
