CDC ends major US Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce

Federal health officials have declared an end to a major multi-state Cyclospora outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce. The outbreak, one of the largest ever recorded in the United States, affected 12,883 people across 21 states and resulted in 570 hospitalizations and two deaths.

The contamination was traced back to processed iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico. In response, the company recalled all iceberg lettuce originating from central Mexico on July 17. While the CDC stated there is no longer a risk from this specific source, the FDA is continuing its investigation into the matter.

The International Fresh Produce Association noted the importance of communication between the FDA, CDC, and the industry during the crisis. The association continues to advocate for increased funding for food safety and the implementation of the Food Traceability Rule to prevent future occurrences.
