Ceará operation dismantles criminal faction in Canindé

On 26 May 2026, the Ministério Público do Ceará (MPCE) launched the “Território Livre” operation, led by its special criminal‑organizations unit (Gaeco), to target a branch of the Comando Vermelho alleged to have attacked internet providers and expanded territory in the municipality of Canindé.

Eighteen judicial orders were executed in Fortaleza and Canindé – four preventive arrests and fourteen search‑and‑seizure warrants. Authorities seized about 2.2 kg of crack, 3.1 kg of cocaine, 30 .38‑calibre ammunition rounds, precision scales, a machete, damaged cell phone, two 5.5 mm lead‑shot boxes, two pressure‑air carbines, cash, and two surveillance cameras with memory cards. One person was arrested in flagrante delicto during the raid. The material will be examined for forensic evidence.

The operation involved MPCE, the state Civil Police, the Command of Intensive Patrol Actions (CPRAIO), the canine‑policing unit (CPCães) and the Ceará Military Police. Investigators say the group, originally from Rio de Janeiro, used rented vehicles for the provider attacks and intimidated residents to expand its criminal control.
