Ceará Police investigate death of law student Isabelle Caracristi

Police in Ceará are investigating the death of law student Isabelle Caracristi, who was found dead after falling from the 23rd floor of a building in Fortaleza on September 13. While forensic experts stated that the fall appeared to be voluntary based on building footage, the Civil Police are investigating her boyfriend, João Munhoz Neto, for suspected inducement to suicide, obstruction of evidence, and psychological abuse.

Investigators recently inspected a vehicle belonging to Munhoz’s brother, which was seen on security cameras arriving at the condominium shortly after the death. Additionally, Munhoz’s mother, Sara Regina Alexandre Munhoz, has been exonerated from her position at the State Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration and Resocialization (SAP) following the investigation.

Testimony from Rudá Bezerra de Carvalho, the owner of the law firm where the couple worked, indicates that Caracristi had previously reported feeling “suffocated” by Munhoz’s professional and personal conduct. Carvalho noted that Munhoz allegedly restricted Caracristi’s independence in the workplace. Munhoz remains in preventive detention as authorities continue to gather evidence regarding the nature of their relationship.
