Investigation into law student death in Fortaleza

Authorities in Fortaleza, Ceará, are investigating the death of 22-year-old law student Isabelle Caracristi, whose body was discovered on September 13 in the courtyard of a condominium in the Aldeota neighborhood.

Forensic examinations from Pefoce indicated the cause of death was multiple trauma, with injuries “consistent with an impact from a fall” from the 23rd floor. While forensic experts stated that building footage suggests the fall appeared to be voluntary, the Civil Police are continuing to investigate João Munhoz Neto, 34, for suspected inducement to suicide, psychological abuse, and obstruction of justice.

New developments in the investigation include the inspection of a vehicle belonging to Munhoz’s brother, which security cameras recorded arriving at the condominium shortly after the incident. Additionally, testimony from Rudá Bezerra de Carvalho, the owner of the law firm where the couple worked, suggests Caracristi had previously reported feeling “suffocated” by Munhoz’s professional and personal conduct, alleging he restricted her independence in the workplace.

Munhoz remains in preventive detention. Meanwhile, his mother, Sara Regina Alexandre Munhoz, has been exonerated from her position at the State Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration and Resocialization (SAP) following the investigation.
