Cecina investigation launched after newborn found dead in hospital bag

Authorities in Livorno have opened an investigation following the death of a newborn brought to the Cecina hospital in a plastic bag. The mother, a 30-year-old woman, told medical staff and police that she was unaware she was pregnant, claiming she believed she was experiencing digestive issues before giving birth at home.

The infant, estimated to have been born prematurely between 30 and 32 weeks, was reportedly already deceased upon arrival at the emergency room. The Prosecutor's Office of Livorno, led by Ezia Mancusi, has ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and to establish whether the child was alive at the moment of birth.

The woman is currently under investigation for infanticide, and authorities are also looking into the role of her partner, who accompanied her to the hospital. The woman remains hospitalized for medical observation and is reported to be in good health.
