Cedar Point cancels Boardwalk Nights opening due to hazardous wildfire smoke
Wildfire smoke from Canadian fires drifted over the Great Lakes region in mid‑July, pushing air‑quality index (AQI) readings in Northeast Ohio above 500, a hazardous level. The severe haze forced Cedar Point, one of the United States' most visited amusement parks, to cancel the opening night of its Boardwalk Nights summer celebration on July 17. The park had planned a nightly lineup of performances, food and games along the Lake Erie shoreline, but the dangerous air made outdoor activity unsafe for guests and staff. The decision followed an early closure of the neighboring Sandusky park on July 16 after AQI levels similarly spiked.
Cedar Point issued an alert on its website and on social media, citing the smoke as the cause of the cancellation and offering refunds or rescheduling for affected visitors. The episode highlights the cross‑border impact of wildfires on recreation and public health in the region.
