German leaders push for legal procedure to ban AfD party

German political leaders are intensifying efforts to initiate a legal ban on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. SPD leadership, including Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, has called for a formal examination of the party, asserting that the AfD poses an internal threat to democracy by normalizing racism and attacking democratic institutions.

Baden-Württemberg Minister-President Cem Özdemir is actively seeking a majority in the Bundesrat to launch the procedure. He noted that an absolute majority of 35 votes is required and emphasized that he would only proceed once such a majority is secured to avoid a political defeat. Özdemir also expressed that a ban should not replace the need for centrist parties to address why they have lost voter trust.

In response to the potential rise of the AfD in state governments, German state interior ministers have modified decision-making mechanisms. A new rule requires approval from at least 13 of the 16 states to prevent a single AfD minister from blocking critical decisions. Additionally, the Defense Ministry is considering measures to restrict the AfD's access to sensitive military and intelligence information.
