CENTCOM clears sea mines in Strait of Hormuz amid Iran blockade
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced the successful clearing of international shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz from sea mines previously planted by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. Admiral Brad Cooper stated that the operation, conducted by Navy divers, SEALs, and air assets, has reopened the maritime corridors to normal traffic.
Despite the clearing of mines, a naval blockade on Iran remains in effect. Admiral Cooper reported that approximately 50,000 U.S. troops are deployed in the region to enforce the blockade and secure global energy supplies. Since the blockade resumed in mid-July, Iran has been unable to export any oil from its coasts.
U.S. forces have facilitated the passage of roughly 1,500 commercial vessels through the Strait, transporting approximately 750 million barrels of crude oil to global markets. Additionally, military forces have reportedly forced 75 ships to retreat and disabled three others for failing to comply with blockade orders. No vessel is permitted to enter or exit Iranian ports without U.S. authorization, except for humanitarian reasons.
