US-Iran War: Economic Warfare and Maritime Instability

Overview

Six months into the conflict following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the war has entered a phase of extreme volatility. Diplomatic efforts have stalled following the expiration of a 60-day interim Memorandum of Understanding on August 17. President Trump has maintained there is ‘no fixed timeline’ for peace, asserting the U.S. holds a significant advantage and demanding that Iran ‘raise the white flag of surrender.’

The administration has intensified its economic offensive through ‘Operation Economic Outcast’ (also called ‘Economic Pariah’), a sweeping sanctions regime targeting gold, technology, aviation, maritime transport, and digital assets. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the campaign as an ‘economic D-Day’ intended to isolate Tehran from the U.S. dollar system. In response, Iranian officials have declared a state of ‘total economic war,’ with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi labeling the sanctions ‘state and economic terrorism.’

Military and maritime instability persists. While Trump claims the Strait of Hormuz is demined and operational, recent projectile strikes on commercial tankers near Oman have underscored ongoing risks. Oil flows through the Strait have dropped from 20 million to 5 million barrels per day. Tensions have escalated following Trump’s claim that the waterway is ‘New US Territory,’ a move dismissed by Tehran as ‘delusions.’

Global impacts remain severe. Europe faces potential LNG shortages ahead of winter, and the conflict's costs are estimated at $213 billion. Domestically, Trump faces declining military support, which has dropped to 31 percent, while the conflict has resulted in at least 18 U.S. service member deaths.
