US‑Iran conflict escalates, Hormuz traffic stays low

Overview

U.S. Central Command has continued its campaign of precision strikes, expanding the target lists to more than 140 sites that include missile depots, drone bases, coastal radars and naval facilities. A third wave of air attacks was launched on July 10‑11, followed on July 12‑13 by the first combat use of one‑way sea drones against a submarine‑maintenance installation at Bandar Abbas. President Donald Trump repeatedly posted on Truth Social that 1,000 missiles are aimed at Iran and vowed further nightly strikes, describing the cease‑fire memorandum as a “test” and proposing a 20 % security fee on oil transiting the strait.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard responded with missile and drone raids on U.S. bases in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, and asserted that its recent strike on U.S. forces was lawful self‑defence. Tehran continues to claim the Strait of Hormuz is closed, while U.S. forces maintain that commercial navigation remains possible.

The exchange has driven oil prices up (Brent near $83, WTI $78) and pushed European natural‑gas futures above €50/MWh. Turkish BIST 100 fell 1.6 % and the Iranian rial steadied around 179 000 per dollar. DP World is negotiating a new Fujairah terminal to bypass the strait, and Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other regional actors have condemned the Iranian attacks and urged restraint. Despite the heightened military activity and market turbulence, vessel movements through Hormuz remain near the July low of roughly 556 000 bbl/d, keeping global energy‑security concerns high.
