Central America earthquake felt in El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua
A strong earthquake struck the Pacific coast of Central America on Wednesday afternoon, affecting El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake at a magnitude of 5.5, while the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of El Salvador recorded a slightly higher magnitude of 5.7.
The epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean, near the department of Usulután, approximately 160 kilometers south of San Salvador. The tremor was felt across much of El Salvador and in various regions of Honduras and Nicaragua, causing panic among local residents.
Authorities from the civil protection agencies of all three nations reported no immediate casualties or significant structural damage. Furthermore, the Ministry of Environment and local tsunami advisory centers confirmed that there is no threat of a tsunami for the Central American coastline. The seismic activity is attributed to the ongoing interaction between the Cocos and Caribbean tectonic plates.
