Seismic activity in Mexico, Central America and Peru

Overview

Seismic activity continued across Mexico, Central America, and Peru through late 2026. In August, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake occurred off the coast of Chiapas, followed by a magnitude 5.5 earthquake near Huixtla on 2 September. Throughout late September and October, the region experienced frequent tremors, including a magnitude 4.5 earthquake near Ciudad Hidalgo on 29 September and multiple events on 1 October and 7 October. On 16 October, a preliminary magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck 26 kilometers south of Mapastepec.

On 25 October, multiple events were recorded in southern Mexico, including a magnitude 4.0 earthquake near Acapulco, Guerrero, and two magnitude 4.0 earthquakes near Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, as well as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake near Matías Romero, Oaxaca. On 26 October, a preliminary magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred 129 kilometers southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo.

On 28 October, a swarm of at least 11 earthquakes was recorded in Chiapas, primarily concentrated along the coast near Ciudad Hidalgo and Huixtla, with the largest tremor in the cluster reaching a magnitude of 4.3 located 150 kilometers southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo. Additionally, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake occurred in Oaxaca, with its epicenter 56 kilometers southwest of Pinotepa Nacional at a depth of 12 kilometers. No injuries or significant structural damage have been reported from these recent events.

On 30 October, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred in Chiapas near Huixtla at a depth of 9 kilometers. In Oaxaca, recent activity included magnitude 4.0 to 4.1 earthquakes in San Pedro Pochutla. As of early 31 October, officials in Mexico City reported no perceptible seismic activity or earthquake alerts.
