Panama earthquake recovery: thousands of homes damaged and humanitarian aid deployed
Following the magnitude 7.5 to 7.7 earthquake on October 9, 2026, Panama is undergoing extensive damage assessments and humanitarian relief efforts. The National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC) reports that over 10,655 homes have been evaluated, with 35,065 people assessed for needs. Cáritas Panamá has reported 3,390 affected dwellings, with the highest concentration of damage in the dioceses of Chitré, Penonomé, and Santiago.
Humanitarian response includes the distribution of over 365 tons of aid by land and 208,317 pounds by air. While 126 shelters are housing 5,628 people, many families continue to live in temporary plastic tents, facing extreme heat and rain. To provide relief, the Panama City Mayor's Office, supported by the Omar Alfano Foundation and private companies, has begun deploying adapted shipping containers as temporary housing equipped with basic services.
Infrastructure damage is significant, affecting 619 schools and 120 health facilities. The Ministry of Education (Meduca) has initiated a progressive return to classes for students in unaffected areas, while maintaining suspensions in Coclé, Herrera, Veraguas, and Los Santos pending safety inspections. Additionally, psychological support teams from the National Police are providing emotional assistance to families in shelters, particularly focusing on the elderly and children.
