Central Bank of Argentina accelerates dollar purchases in October

The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) has significantly accelerated its foreign currency purchases in October. In the first seven trading days of the month, the institution accumulated approximately US$341 million, representing 72% of the total amount acquired throughout the entire month of September.

Daily average purchases rose from US$22 million in September to US$49 million in October. This surge in intervention aims to strengthen international reserves to meet debt obligations, fulfill commitments to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and provide financial stability ahead of the upcoming electoral year.

Analysts from Invertir en Bolsa (IEB) noted that maintaining these reserves is critical for managing upcoming maturities, such as the Bopreal bonds due in 2027. Additionally, the Treasury's plan to place US$5 billion in local dollar-denominated debt faces challenges due to rising country risk, which may force the Treasury to rely on central bank reserves to meet external commitments.
