Central Java dam and tree planting seek to secure water for farmers
Chairman of the Central Java Regional House of Representatives, Sumanto, led a river‑bank tree‑planting campaign in Jatiyoso, Karanganyar, urging communities to protect waterways ahead of an anticipated long dry season. He warned that "the dry season must be prepared for early; otherwise farmers will struggle to obtain water as river flow decreases," emphasizing the need for irrigation water, water‑storage facilities and conservation measures to protect agricultural productivity.
The provincial government also highlighted the newly built Jlantah Dam in the same district, inaugurated online by President Prabowo Subianto. The dam can irrigate about 1,500 hectares of existing farmland and support the development of another 229 hectares of new rice fields, potentially increasing rice yields to about 27,000 tonnes per year and strengthening food security in Karanganyar and surrounding areas.
