Central Java implements integrated housing and social welfare programs

As Central Java marks its 81st anniversary, the provincial government is implementing a comprehensive approach to addressing unfit housing (RTLH) by linking infrastructure improvements with social welfare. Governor Ahmad Luthfi stated that the initiative aims to support families holistically, addressing issues such as education for dropouts and employment opportunities alongside physical home repairs.

The province has made significant progress in reducing the housing backlog. In 2025, 274,514 units were addressed, reducing the backlog from 1,332,968 units at the start of 2025 to 1,058,454 units by the start of 2026. As of the second quarter of 2026, an additional 65,449 units have been handled.

Funding for these projects comes from various sources, including the national budget (APBN), village funds, provincial and district budgets (APBD), corporate social responsibility (CSR), and Baznas. Data from 2025 shows that the majority of the provincial budget's efforts focused on upgrading existing unfit housing rather than new construction, with 17,170 units improved compared to 340 new builds.
