Javan provinces mandate SPPG to buy local eggs and chicken for free nutrition program

In Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta, all Satuan Pelayanan Pemenuhan Gizi (SPPG) units were ordered to source eggs and chicken exclusively from local poultry farmers for the Government’s Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program. The agreement, signed by the provincial government, Badan Gizi Nasional (BGN), farmer associations and cooperatives, sets price caps at Rp 26,000 per kilogram for eggs and Rp 35,000 per kilogram for chicken carcasses, with a target to absorb about 7 % of regional poultry output – roughly 1,050 tonnes of eggs per week. Vice‑Governor Taj Yasin emphasized that the policy aims to protect farmers from oversupply‑driven price cuts (live chicken prices have fallen to around Rp 17,000 /kg, below the Rp 20,000 /kg reference) and rising feed costs.

The initiative also includes strict monitoring by BGN, which will penalise any SPPG that purchases below the set reference prices. In Padang, the temporary suspension of MBG operations during school holidays left pregnant women, nursing mothers, toddlers, 47 volunteers and partner micro‑enterprises without income, highlighting the program’s broader socioeconomic role. Meanwhile, in Jember, SPPG staff and supporters staged protests that delayed two DPRD sessions, demanding budget reallocations, a review of BGN’s governance and political endorsements for the MBG agenda. Local SPPG units elsewhere, such as in Jember’s Jombang district, recruit entirely from nearby residents, creating modest employment opportunities for low‑income households.
