Central Sulawesi, Indonesia shaken by magnitude‑6.7 quake and follow‑up aftershocks

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Central Sulawesi on 16 June 2026, centred about 42 km southeast of Palu at a depth of 16 km. The shock caused intensity VII on the Modified Mercalli scale, damaging houses, government offices, schools and hotels in Palu and especially in Sigi Regency, where damage was moderate to severe. The BMKG deployed teams to conduct macro‑seismic and micro‑tremor surveys, coordinating with local authorities and the BNPB. The BNPB warned of flash‑flood and landslide hazards from earthquake‑triggered debris blocking drainage.

After the main event, aftershocks continued. On 21 June 2026 a magnitude 4.1 tremor was recorded in Sigi, part of a series that totaled 1,163 aftershocks, the largest aftershock reaching magnitude 5.3. BMKG reported monitoring hundreds of aftershocks daily (949 by 19 June, then over 1,100 by 21 June) and urged residents to remain vigilant and follow official information.
