CEPAL urges Latin American nations to diversify strategic alliances
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) has proposed that the region diversify its strategic alliances to navigate a changing global geopolitical order. A high-level report, titled ‘Ruptures and Opportunities: Proposals for Latin America and the Caribbean to Prosper in the New Geopolitical Era’, suggests that natural resources and human talent alone are insufficient for regional prosperity without clear plans, concrete agreements, and strong institutions.
The report, co-chaired by former presidents Michelle Bachelet and Iván Duque, emphasizes the need to avoid rigid alignments and instead multiply international agreements to enhance the region's agency. Experts involved noted that security, economy, and values are critical pillars for future foreign policy decisions.
In a separate commentary, former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa warned of a decline in multilateralism and respect for international law. During a visit to Mexico, Correa expressed concern over the rise of conservative movements and what he termed ‘technofascism’ on social media, arguing that the current global order lacks established rules and favors the ‘law of the strongest’ over institutional stability.
