Cereal Fire Ravages Fields Near Talavera, Spain
A wildfire ignited in cereal fields near Talavera (Segarra) on Wednesday afternoon, consuming about 60‑102 hectares of unharvested crops. More than 60 fire units, including 13 aerial crews, and over 200 firefighters were deployed. The blaze forced the confinement of residents from the villages of Pallerols, Sant Antolí, Vilanova de Briançó and the Hostalets for more than three hours, and the A‑2 highway was briefly closed.
The flames approached a nearby pig farm to within five metres, but the livestock and infrastructure were unharmed. Residents reported that the fire could have caused far greater damage, with one neighbor saying, “It could have been much worse and burned much more.” The fire was stabilised within four hours, and the civil protection authority lifted the confinement at 22:15. Local authorities warned that the harvest period increases fire risk and called for planting during cooler hours. Additional smaller fires were also tackled in nearby areas on the same day.
The incident resulted in economic losses for farmers due to destroyed crops, though insurance coverage may mitigate the impact.
