Cerrado deforestation drops 18.9% in August, Inpe reports

Data from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) shows an 18.9% decrease in deforestation alerts in the Cerrado biome during August compared to the same period last year. The Deter system recorded 238 square kilometers of vegetation loss in August, marking the second-best result for the month since the monitoring series began in 2018. Experts attribute this decline to sustained joint efforts between federal and state governments to combat illegal clearing.

In contrast, the Amazon biome saw a 12.1% increase in deforestation alerts in August, rising from 319 square kilometers last year to 358 square kilometers. While the quarterly trend for the Amazon shows a reduction compared to the previous year, officials expressed concern regarding the monthly spike, particularly in the state of Pará.

Complementary reports highlight the role of Indigenous lands as vital barriers to deforestation, with approximately 95% of Indigenous territories in the Cerrado maintaining native vegetation. Additionally, industrial conservation efforts in Araxá have reached milestones in seedling production, while human rights initiatives aim to strengthen the capacity of traditional community leaders to protect the biome through international legal mechanisms.
