Cerro Maggiore opposes large-scale photovoltaic project

The Municipality of Cerro Maggiore has expressed strong opposition to a proposed photovoltaic plant project located on agricultural land between Cerro and Cantalupo. The project involves the installation of 20,000 solar panels covering more than 150,000 square meters, an area equivalent to approximately 20 football fields.

Mayor Nuccia Berra described the project as unprecedented in scale for the territory, noting it is five times larger than previous local proposals. Local officials argue that the installation would cause significant landscape disruption and environmental damage, specifically threatening an essential ecological corridor within the Mughetti Park (Plis dei Mughetti).

While the administration acknowledges that renewable energy is a strategic future goal, officials maintain that the energy transition must not come at the expense of local agricultural activities and territorial planning. The municipal council has approved a formal resolution detailing technical objections and regulatory concerns to contest the project.
