Cervia initiates sand dune reinforcement to protect coastline
Coastal management efforts are underway in Cervia, Italy, to protect the shoreline from autumn and winter storm surges. Starting October 12, work will begin to raise the sand dunes along approximately nine kilometers of the coast. This artificial barrier, featuring a three-meter-wide base, is designed to mitigate wave energy and reduce erosion for beach establishments, the promenade, and nearby urban areas. The project is funded by an annual investment of approximately 300,000 euros from 200 concessionaires associated with the Cooperativa Bagnini di Cervia.
In conjunction with these physical defenses, the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) is organizing a conference titled ‘Le dune che rinascono’ (The dunes that are reborn) in Cervia. The event aims to address the conservation of coastal habitats, biodiversity, and the complex relationship between beaches, pine forests, and urbanized areas. Discussions will focus on protecting the remaining dunes in Pinarella and Tagliata, as well as the cultural approach to living on fragile coastlines.
