Cesenatico rolls out extensive mosquito‑control plan for tiger and common species

The municipality of Cesenatico has reactivated its vector‑control programme, issuing two ordinances that target the common mosquito and the invasive tiger mosquito, both potential carriers of West Nile, Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya viruses.

In May, the contracted service completed the first larvicidal treatment cycle on roughly 9,500 road drains and manholes belonging to municipal property. Six monthly treatment cycles are scheduled from May through October, coordinated with the AUSL Romagna health authority, which also monitors the effectiveness of the interventions.

Residents can collect a free anti‑larval kit at the municipal public‑relations office or at nine authorised newsstands and local committees from May 2026. The plan advises private owners to regularly treat drainage points, remove standing water from containers, keep gutters clear, cover rain‑water tanks and, where feasible, introduce fish that prey on larvae. Adult‑mosquito control will be applied only in extraordinary situations, following a specific disinfestation protocol and prior notification to affected neighbourhoods.
