Ceuta border: Moroccan forces detain hundreds of migrants

Moroccan security forces have intensified patrols near the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, utilizing helicopters, drones, and dogs to prevent mass migration attempts. Between Saturday and Sunday afternoon, authorities detained approximately 300 migrants and 61 Moroccan nationals suspected of facilitating human smuggling operations.

The current situation follows a major crisis on July 30, when an estimated 80,000 people attempted to enter Ceuta in a two-day period. While approximately 70,000 of those individuals returned to Morocco within 48 hours, local authorities estimate that between 5,000 and 9,000 migrants currently remain in the enclave, often living in precarious conditions.

Death tolls related to the migration attempts remain a subject of conflicting reports. The Spanish government confirmed 82 deaths on its side of the border, while the Moroccan government reported 14 deaths. Additionally, the NGO Caminando Fronteras claims that Moroccan authorities recovered at least 63 bodies from the water.
