Ceuta authorities urge minor repatriation amid migration crisis
The Spanish enclave of Ceuta continues to face the aftermath of a mass migration event from Morocco. Local authorities, led by President Juan Vivas, are urgently calling for the repatriation of over 3,000 unaccompanied minors to Morocco to prevent further humanitarian crises and protect territorial integrity.
In response to the ongoing situation, the Spanish Ministry of the Interior has committed to evacuating migrants from the hills surrounding Ceuta by November 1. Police operations are also underway in areas like Los Rosales and Tarajal to relocate individuals from the streets to temporary reception centers.
However, the government's management has drawn sharp criticism. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Oxfam, have filed a complaint with the Spanish ombudsman, alleging 'grave rights violations' regarding expedited asylum procedures and the potential forced return of vulnerable individuals. Additionally, the FeSMC-UGT union has raised concerns regarding the lack of hygiene and safety resources for private security personnel working in the city's health centers following the influx.
On a domestic level, the Spanish government has requested the Basque Country to increase its capacity for hosting foreign minors, despite existing local tensions regarding resource saturation in regions like Biscay.
