Ceuta begins mass burials of unidentified migrants following border crisis

Authorities in Ceuta have begun the mass burial of unidentified migrants who died during a major border crisis in late July. At the Sidi Embarek Muslim cemetery, officials are conducting burials of approximately 10 to 12 individuals per day, with a total of around 70 bodies expected to be interred. Because approximately 95 percent of the deceased have not been identified, graves are being marked with numbers rather than names to facilitate future identification through DNA or fingerprints.

The crisis, which saw over 72,000 people attempt to enter the Spanish enclave from Morocco, resulted in significant loss of life. Official records indicate 82 deaths on the Ceuta side and 14 on the Moroccan side, with forensic evidence suggesting most deaths were caused by drowning or stampedes near border checkpoints.

The Moroccan Association for Human Rights has called for a suspension of these burials, urging authorities to prioritize identification and the repatriation of bodies to Morocco so families can bury them with dignity. While Ceuta city officials stated that repatriation paperwork has been completed, they noted that the Moroccan government has not yet accepted the remains.
