Ceuta migrant crisis: National Court investigates mass entry and security coordination

The Spanish National Court is investigating the mass entry of migrants into Ceuta that occurred on July 30 and 31. Senior security officials, including National Police Chief Inspector Lorenzo Juan Fages Cortés and Civil Guard Lieutenant Colonel Miguel Lobo, have testified regarding a heated dispute during the crisis over whether to close the border gate. While Fages advocated for closing the gate to halt the influx, Lobo argued that keeping it open was necessary to prevent fatal crushing.

Testimony from commanders also included observations of Moroccan naval vessels near the border the night before the event. Witnesses alleged that Moroccan authorities were seen directing migrants toward the city while security forces appeared inactive. Additionally, one migrant identified high-ranking Moroccan officials near the border during the influx.

In the aftermath, Moroccan authorities have repatriated 327 unaccompanied minors from Ceuta since August 2. Meanwhile, Spanish police have intensified operations in various neighborhoods to locate migrants who remain unidentified or are hiding in informal housing. Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas has criticized the Spanish government’s response, citing a lack of decisive diplomatic action and insufficient management of the estimated 4,000 minors currently in the enclave.
