Ceuta continues mass burials of migrants following deadly crossing attempt

Authorities in Ceuta are continuing mass burials following a deadly migration attempt in late July. As of recent reports, 42 bodies have been interred at the Sidi Imbarek Islamic Cemetery, with burials expected to continue until approximately 90 remains are processed.

Many of the deceased remain unidentified, with graves marked by serial numbers rather than names to allow for future identification via DNA or fingerprints. Spanish media reports indicate that approximately 82 bodies were recovered on the Spanish side. While nine victims have reportedly had their identities confirmed through forensic data, their repatriation to Morocco has not yet occurred.

Moroccan Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi stated that Morocco is prepared to receive the remains of its citizens but requires complete medical files and official documentation to verify identities before proceeding. However, local reports from Ceuta suggest that the necessary documentation for the nine identified individuals may already be available, creating a discrepancy regarding the timeline for repatriation.
