Ceuta economic losses from migration crisis rise to 33 million euros
The Ceuta Chamber of Commerce has revised its estimate of the direct economic damage caused by the recent migration crisis, raising the figure to over 33 million euros. This updated assessment represents a 19% increase from previous projections.
The crisis, which began in late July following a large-scale arrival of migrants, has severely impacted local industries. The tourism sector has seen a 90% drop in demand, while hotel occupancy fell by 50%. The commerce sector reported an average turnover reduction of 53%, affecting various categories including fashion, technology, and food.
Additionally, the hospitality and catering industries experienced a 50.7% decline. The Chamber noted that businesses are facing liquidity issues due to plummeting sales combined with ongoing fixed costs. The economic downturn was further exacerbated by the cancellation of the local Fair, which resulted in losses of 15.7 million euros, up from an initial estimate of 10.4 million.
