Ceuta experiences rise in racism following migration influx

The Spanish enclave of Ceuta is facing increased racial tensions and hate speech following a significant influx of over 70,000 migrants from Morocco in July 2026. Residents with North African roots, including Spanish citizens of Muslim faith, report being targeted for physical aggression and verbal abuse due to their appearance or religion.

While Ceuta has historically been celebrated as a city of coexistence among Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism, the recent migration crisis has strained this social fabric. Local residents report that children of Hispano-Moroccan descent are frequently mistaken for migrants and subjected to violence. These incidents have fueled a rise in extremist rhetoric within the city, challenging the traditional narrative of harmonious multiculturalism in the enclave.
