Ceuta faces health risks as migrant influx strains hospital resources
The Ministry of Health's Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES) has identified a moderate risk of infectious disease transmission among migrants in Ceuta. This assessment follows a massive influx of tens of thousands of people in late July. While the risk to the local population is considered low, the CCAES warns that overcrowding, poor sanitation, and limited access to clean water among migrants increase vulnerability to respiratory, waterborne, and foodborne illnesses.
At the Ceuta University Hospital, staff members report that the facility is operating at its limit. A hospital worker testified that certain medical sections are entirely occupied by patients requiring isolation due to contagious diseases. To manage the pressure, the hospital has reportedly activated areas previously reserved for catastrophe situations.
Amidst these challenges, the Medical Union of Ceuta has raised concerns regarding the treatment of healthcare professionals. The union alleged that workers faced potential disciplinary actions for speaking to the media about the healthcare crisis. INGESA has categorically denied any claims of intimidation or coercion against staff.
