Ceuta faces humanitarian crisis after mass migration influx from Morocco FAST-MOVING

The Spanish enclave of Ceuta is facing a severe humanitarian crisis following a mass influx of irregular migrants from Morocco at the end of July. While the Spanish government estimates that approximately 72,000 people entered the city during July 30 and 31, officials noted that the majority returned to Morocco within 24 to 48 hours. Currently, between 5,000 and 8,000 migrants are estimated to remain in the enclave, including 1,898 identified unaccompanied minors.

Health Minister Mónica García has described the situation as an ‘absolutely exceptional humanitarian crisis,’ highlighting the risks of overcrowding and poor sanitary conditions. Local social organizations have raised alarms regarding approximately 4,000 unidentified children who remain outside the formal protection system, facing risks of exploitation and violence.

In response, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has convened interministerial meetings to coordinate security, humanitarian assistance, and territorial management. Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration Elma Saiz is visiting Ceuta to evaluate the humanitarian response and meet with local authorities. Meanwhile, Moroccan security forces have increased patrols and arrests to prevent further mass crossings, following reports of viral social media rumors that fueled the initial surge.
