Ceuta faces migration crisis following mass influx from Morocco
The Spanish enclave of Ceuta is facing a significant humanitarian and security crisis following a mass influx of migrants from Morocco. The Spanish government estimates that approximately 72,000 people entered the territory irregularly on July 30 and 31. While officials state that most returned within 48 hours, thousands remain in the enclave, with local administration reporting figures between 8,000 and 12,000 people.
In response to the situation, Ceuta Mayor Juan Jesús Vivas has called for the suspension of asylum rights in the event of future mass arrivals and has urged the immediate repatriation of migrants to Morocco. The Spanish central government is also considering reforms to immigration laws to facilitate easier repatriations.
The humanitarian impact is severe; approximately 1,800 unaccompanied minors are being housed in dedicated facilities, while many others are living in makeshift camps on beaches and streets. The Guardia Civil has reported finding 19 bodies following the influx. Meanwhile, Moroccan authorities have recently blocked nearly 300 migrants attempting to reach the border, highlighting the ongoing tension and the role of border controls in managing the flow.
