Ceuta firefighters discover migrant settlement in abandoned military tunnels

Firefighters in Ceuta have discovered a migrant settlement located within an abandoned underground military tunnel. The discovery occurred during an intervention to extinguish a fire reported inside the galleries.

The tunnels, which were previously sealed, connect the Sarchal beach area to the current University of Granada campus. Occupants appear to have gained access by breaking through one of the walls that sealed the entrance. While no individuals were found on-site during the emergency response, authorities discovered evidence of prolonged habitation, including mattresses, blankets, pots, food remains, and inflatable rafts.

Emergency services also found a significant accumulation of waste and debris throughout the passage. Officials have officially denied rumors regarding the presence of military ammunition or explosives within the site, and they categorically rejected speculations suggesting the tunnels connect to Moroccan territory, clarifying that the infrastructure is part of Ceuta's former military installations.
