Ceuta registers over 1,300 unaccompanied migrant minors amid crisis FAST-MOVING
Spain’s autonomous city of Ceuta is coping with a surge of unaccompanied migrant minors. The Ministry of Youth and Childhood counted 1,342 children in the city’s reception system, while police have identified 528 but acknowledge the total is higher. Local shelters, designed for about 100 minors, are currently housing more than 1,000, prompting calls for urgent redistribution to other autonomous communities.
Minister Sira Rego visited Ceuta, announced a technical team will be present from 16 August and said the first transfers could begin within a few weeks. The government has also allocated a special budget for “solidary and binding” accommodation and plans a sectorial conference on the issue by the end of August.
The political debate is intense. Vox spokesperson José Antonio Fúster demanded the resignation of Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas and urged the immediate return of the minors to Morocco, citing the 2007 Spain‑Morocco cooperation agreement. Andalusian vice‑president Manuel Gavira criticised the central government for not applying that agreement, while Morocco says it is ready to receive its nationals once Spain removes legal and administrative obstacles. Meanwhile, police have reinforced their presence in Ceuta and dozens of minors have gathered at the city’s police headquarters to be identified.
