Ceuta border crisis: CNI report alleges Moroccan authorities knew of mass entry plans
A report from the Spanish National Intelligence Centre (CNI) has been submitted to the Audiencia Nacional, alleging that Moroccan authorities were fully aware of the planned mass entry of migrants into Ceuta in late July. The intelligence document states that Moroccan officials knew of specific social media calls for the mass crossing, which coincided with Morocco’s Throne Day holiday.
The CNI report claims that while Moroccan forces showed some proactivity in intercepting swimmers in previous days, they exhibited a level of passivity during the peak of the crisis on July 30 and 31. This lack of proactive response and insufficient deployment of security forces allegedly contributed to the border overflow, which saw tens of thousands of people attempt to enter the Spanish enclave.
In the aftermath of the crisis, medical reports from the Ceuta University Hospital indicate that at least 25 Moroccan migrant women have given birth in the facility. Additionally, reports from families and observers suggest the human toll of the crossing was significant, with some estimates citing 141 deaths during the attempt.
