Ceuta migrant crisis sparks controversy in Spanish football

Spanish football has become a focal point for political tension following a controversy involving Real Madrid players Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, and Ibrahima Konaté. The players previously wore rolled-up shirts featuring a solidarity message related to Ceuta, a Spanish enclave currently facing a humanitarian crisis. In late July, approximately 72,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta over two days, overwhelming local resources. The NGO Caminando Fronteras reported 141 deaths near the border during the immediate aftermath of the influx.

During a recent Madrid derby at the Metropolitano Stadium, a banner was displayed stating, “Ceuta es España. Ni se arruga, ni se tapa.” (Ceuta is Spain. It is neither rolled up, nor covered.)

Mbappé addressed the controversy, stating his gesture was intended to acknowledge the suffering of all people involved in the crisis rather than to show a lack of support for Ceuta. Real Madrid stated it respects the players' freedom to participate in such initiatives, while La Liga president Javier Tebas criticized the players, though he did not classify the campaign as political. Barcelona had previously opted not to wear the solidarity shirts during their match against Levante.
