Ceuta migrant crisis and Spanish football controversy
Overview
A humanitarian crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has spilled into Spanish football. Following an influx in late July where approximately 72,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta over two days, the NGO Caminando Fronteras reported 141 deaths near the border.
In response to the situation, Real Madrid players Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, and Ibrahima Konaté wore rolled-up shirts featuring solidarity messages. This gesture sparked political tension and criticism from La Liga president Javier Tebas. During a Madrid derby, supporters displayed a banner reading, “Ceuta es España. Ni se arruga, ni se tapa.” (Ceuta is Spain. It is neither rolled up, nor covered.)
Mbappé clarified that his actions were intended to acknowledge the suffering of all people involved in the crisis rather than to express a lack of support for Ceuta. Real Madrid maintained that they respect the players' freedom to participate in such initiatives.
