Ceuta migrant crisis sparks calls for independent investigation
Human rights activists and border unions are calling for accountability following a mass migration event in Ceuta on July 30, where tens of thousands attempted to enter the Spanish enclave from Morocco.
The Moroccan Human Rights Association (AMDH) has demanded an independent investigation into the deaths occurring during the crossing. While official figures report approximately 94 deaths, the AMDH estimates the toll may be as high as 141. The association is urging Spain and Morocco to coordinate the return of remains and to implement effective rescue mechanisms.
Spanish border worker unions claim they issued multiple warnings to authorities between July 10 and July 23 regarding rising sea arrivals and legal loopholes following a June court ruling. They argue the government failed to take timely action to secure the border.
Politically, former Spanish minister Jorge Fernández Díaz has criticized the current administration for failing to address the incident before parliament. He suggested the scale of the influx could not have occurred without the cooperation or deliberate inaction of Moroccan authorities.
