Ceuta migrant rush death toll rises to 80

A young sub‑Saharan migrant died on Friday after a paraglider attempt to cross into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta went wrong, becoming the first recorded death of its kind. Civil Guard officers recovered the body near the border with Morocco.

The incident comes amid a larger surge of irregular migration to Ceuta that has left at least 80 people dead, most of them drowned while trying to swim around a sea barrier since July 30. Spanish authorities have identified 80 bodies and reported that roughly 70,000 of the 72,000 arrivals have been returned to Morocco. Those who remain face overcrowded conditions with limited shelter, food, water and sanitation, prompting tension between Spain and other EU members over immigration policy.
