Ceuta migration crisis sparks debate over border violence and hybrid warfare

The migration situation in Ceuta has drawn intense scrutiny and conflicting interpretations from religious and social commentators. Author Youssef M. Ouled has characterized the events in the Spanish autonomous city as a ‘massacre,’ arguing that European borders have turned human mobility into a matter of life and death. He contends that the violence and institutional racism encountered at these borders are not accidental but are structural consequences of current migration policies.

In a separate perspective, the Archbishop of Oviedo, Jesús Sanz Montes, described the migration surge as a ‘hybrid war’ and a ‘calculated menace’ that exposes geopolitical weaknesses. He noted that the influx has left local populations feeling besieged by fear and intimidation. While criticizing the geopolitical implications, Sanz Montes also acknowledged the human tragedy, stating that many migrants are victims fleeing political hellscapes, famine, and religious radicalism.
