Ceuta migration crisis: 72,000 arrive from Morocco, causing humanitarian emergency

Ceuta is facing a severe humanitarian and security crisis following a mass migration event in late July 2026, when approximately 72,000 people attempted to enter the Spanish enclave from Morocco. While the Spanish Ministry of the Interior estimates that 5,000 migrants remain, local authorities suggest the number could be as high as 10,000, including roughly 2,000 minors.

The crisis has resulted in significant loss of life, with Spanish authorities recording 82 deaths, many due to drowning or stampedes near border crossings. In response to the overcrowding, the Spanish government has secured temporary accommodation for 1,800 people and is planning the urgent transfer of approximately 500 unaccompanied migrant girls to mainland Spain to access specialized care.

Humanitarian organizations, including the UNHCR, have raised alarms regarding the lack of access to food, water, and sanitation. The UNHCR estimates that about 1,200 migrants in Ceuta may qualify for international protection. The situation has also sparked political tension in Spain, with debates intensifying over border management, the responsibility of regional governments, and the protection of minors.
