Ceuta migrant influx prompts security alerts and repatriation talks
In late July and early August 2026, between 60 000 and 72 000 migrants entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, overwhelming the city of about 85 000 residents. Spanish forces have installed a 500‑metre floating barrier and increased patrols.
Morocco’s royal family has signalled willingness to cooperate with Spain and other European partners to identify and return hundreds of unaccompanied minors. The Andalusian regional government pledged to comply with national immigration law, reject further illegal arrivals and support the repatriation of minors. The European Union’s interior ministers have said the situation is under control, while the Ceuta local government has asked for additional EU resources to secure the border and manage the humanitarian emergency.
